Caring for Your Kente Fabric

Fabric Composition: Authentic Handwoven Kente (100% Cotton)

Our Kente fabric is meticulously handwoven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. As a delicate and culturally rich textile, it deserves special care to maintain its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and luxurious texture. Follow the provided care instructions to preserve the beauty and authenticity of your Kente garment for years to come.

Hand Washing

Delicately hand washing your Kente cloth is one of the oldest and most effective methods of fabric preservation. A gentle washing powder mixed with warm water can help maintain the cloth’s cleanliness and longevity. For added protection, include a dash of fabric conditioner to prevent color fading and leave the cloth feeling soft, smooth, and lightly scented. Fabric conditioner also helps reduce fiber friction, making the cloth easier to iron and protecting it against bobbling over time.

Dry Cleaning

If you prefer a safer option or lack confidence in hand washing your Kente at home, dry cleaning is a recommended alternative. Professional dry cleaners use solvents, rather than water, to effectively dissolve grease and stains, offering a thorough cleaning without damaging the fabric. Since Kente can be woven from a mix of natural fibers like cotton, silk, and wool, or synthetic materials such as polyester or rayon, dry cleaning is especially beneficial for delicate weaves. It reduces the risk of shrinkage, distortion, or color fading, which can occur with water washing. Some elders even prefer to air dry their Kente and avoid washing it altogether to preserve its quality and structure over time.

Ironing with Low to Medium Heat

To protect your handwoven Kente cloth, always iron with low to medium heat. If higher heat is needed, iron the cloth inside out and start by testing a small, inconspicuous area. For bulkier or stiffer fabrics like Kente, irons are often preferred over steamers because they provide a crisp, clean finish. Thanks to Kente’s durable fibers and thick weave, ironing can be an efficient way to remove creases while maintaining the fabric’s structure and quality.

Steaming

Steaming is another effective option, particularly for delicate or synthetic fiber blends. Steaming reduces the risk of burning your Kente cloth, as it avoids direct heat from metal iron plates. This is ideal for newer Kente designs, which often incorporate synthetic fibers like polyester, rayon, or lurex yarns that are prone to damage when exposed to high temperatures. By using only steam to relax and smooth the material, you can safely remove creases while preserving the integrity of the weave and vibrant colors.
